There is no denying the fact that taking care of your skin is important but people, especially the youth, is obsessed with the whole idea of skin whitening.

Large number of companies are selling skin whitening products, deceiving the consumers by depicting in their mega-budgeted advertisements, that people with lighter skin tone are offered bigger opportunities in life as compared to the ones with darker tone.

This whole idea drowns them in self-disgust and they do not hesitate to try anything that promises them lighter skin tone. This is all utter absurdity. Mercury, used in most bestsellers, can poison the bloodstream and is highly toxic as it can be easily absorbed resulting in kidney, brain and gastrointestinal disorders, skin rashes, muscle weakness and mood swings.

I am not opposing this whole practice of skin whitening but all I want to project is that definitely try to give your skin a lighter tone but use the products that are safe and not harmful at least.

There are a number of home remedies that can give you your desirable lighter-toned skin. These remedies do not have hazardous side effects nor do they cost an arm and a leg. They are easily available, safe, and cheap and guarantee you fair and glowing skin.

Let’s have a look at what these remedies are and how miraculously they work on your skin:

1. Yogurt Remedy


Yogurt can be used in various ways to whiten your skin. Yogurt is not only beneficial for your digestive health but promotes the glow and health of your skin too. It contains lactic acid that acts as a bleaching agent for your skin. It moisturizes your skin too.


  • Apply yogurt on your skin and wash it off with lukewarm water after few minutes of its application. It must be done once daily for few weeks to observe a significant change.
  • You can also use the mixture of 1 tablespoon of yogurt and one half tablespoon of honey on your skin to whiten it. Rinse it off after 15-20 minutes .Must is done once daily.
  • Mix yogurt and oatmeal to prepare a mask. Add a few drops of lemon and then gently apply on the skin.

2. Orange Remedy


Your skin needs a good amount vitamin C to maintain its freshness and glow. Vitamin C is abundantly found in oranges so it serves as powerful skin whitening remedy.

Oranges contain bleaching agents that serve to lighten your skin tone. Researchers have shown that a glass of orange juice everyday helps in maintaining and promoting the health of your skin.


Oranges can be used in following ways:

  • Take 2 tablespoons of orange juice and add a dash of turmeric powder, apply this mixture daily before going to bed. Leave it for an hour and then wash it off.
  • Grind dried peels of an orange and add 1 tablespoon of yogurt, mix well together to make a paste. Apply it on your face and then rinse it off after 15-20 minutes. Do not repeat the procedure more than twice a week.

3. Gram Flour Remedy

Gram flour is the most widely used home remedy for skin whitening .Gram flour helps remove dead skin and also accelerates the formation of new skin cells.

Gram flour has an excellent ability to suck in excess oil and sebum, just leaving behind enough oil to keep the skin moisturized.


  • Make a thick paste of gram flour with few drops of rose water and apply it on your face. Let it dry and then rinse it off with water.

4. Turmeric Remedy


Turmeric, when used on skin, can do wonders. This natural remedy has an excellent ability to balance the melanin contenting the skin which in turn gives you a lighter toned skin.

Moreover, turmeric is also an antiseptic and has various antioxidants which boost the health of your skin.


  • The paste of turmeric powder and milk cream when applied on face produces desirable results. It must be done on a regular basis.
  • Prepare a mask by combining 2 teaspoons of gram flour, 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder and 1 teaspoon of lemon juice. Apply it on your face and let it dry for 20-25 minutes. Rinse it off with lukewarm water.

5. Oatmeal Remedy


Your skin attains a lighter tone when the old skin cells are exfoliated and the growth of new skin cells is promoted. Oatmeal serves this purpose.


Oatmeal can be used on skin in two different ways:

  • Mix of oatmeal and tomato juice together and apply on your face for 20 minutes and then rinse it off with cold water. Gently rub the scrub while rinsing so that the dead cells are removed. Do it once regularly.
  • Alternatively, you can make a mixture by combining 1 teaspoon oatmeal powder and a dash of turmeric powder. Squeeze in a few drops of lemon juice and apply it on your face once regularly to reap the maximum benefits.
